Magickal uses: Healing, Strength, Protection, Snake Repelling, Power over supernatural.  It is used in spells related to strength, healing, and protection against thieves and fever. Use in any working to enhance the effect of other herbs. Place in a charm to protect against snakes.  Brew as a tea for divination and vivid dreams, a protection herb when placed in a charm around the neck of a child. For a healing and purification bath, brew an infusion in boiling water for 9 minutes, then speak incantations and wishes over the water and pour into a prepared bath. Pinches of dried herb can be tossed into a fireplace or over the flame of a candle, or thrown into an easterly wind for healing wishes.   Burning Plantain leaves enhances the magickal powers of other herbs you might use in your working. It is also used in charms and talismans to prevent nightmares and protect against evil spirits [sprites].   Put it into a sachet to place underneath your pillow at night for a good night’s sleep and protect against nightmares. It is believed to protect travelers from harm and protect the home and car. To keep your property safe from theft: in good old-fashioned mojo tradition, fill a blue flannel mojo bag with plantain and place it or at the four compass points, around your property.


Beneficial Uses:  Antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-toxic and has been used since ancient Greece as a remedy many different problems, from the common cold to snake bites. Has an expectorant affect on the lungs and the tea is recommended for people who are trying to quit smoking as well as for people suffering from lung complaints. Plantago can be shredded or chewed and applied to wounds, insect bites, stings burns, poison ivy and other skin irritations for quick relief. As a tea it is also good for relieving cold symptoms.  Being useful in the treatment of excessive loss of fluid from the body, whether this is in the form of excessive women's bleeding, or diarrhoea, or excessive urination. Can be used for rheumatic complaints and gout. For the digestive system, it can bring ease to gastroenteritis, colic and related inflamed conditions of the digestive tract. A tea of plantain leaves can be used to ease the discomfort of stomach ulcers and upset stomach. The plant is excellent for removing toxins from the gut, and for toning the digestive system.  It’s great for mouth health and in the relief of inflamed gums and tooth infections. The tinctures or a striong infusion can be used as a mouthwash. Plantain may be used in place of Comfrey in all herbal preparations, particularly for those with liver issues. It is a safer alternative and has comparable properties.  Although plantain is used for treating skin irritations, some people get contact dermatitis from it.


Contra-indications and warnings: People who take blood thinners or who are at risk for blood clots should never take plantago internally, not as a vegetable or a tea, but can use it externally.  Please be sure to talk to a health practitioner before using this or any other herb as medicine. Avoid during pregnancy.
